Introduction to Organizational Research on Health Institutions

Abstract
This paper attempts to provide an organizational theory perspective to the study of health administration. As a starting point for a systematic assessment of health care organizations, it presents a distinctive view of health care as a social institution calling upon a general systems framework as a basis of this perspective.
Organizational theory is a discipline still gestating and not fully formed. A brief review of soma of the developments in the discipline is made. Following the review, a framework for the analysis of health care organizations is presented. This framework is based on the critical assumptions underlying the use of the systems concept as well as the orientation provided by a structural perspective, and it is able to deal with both the organizational level and individual level of analysis.
There has been a gradual but consistent movement toward the application of evolving administrative and organizational theory to health services. Obviously the task of administration is very difficult and challenging. In administration, many more significant factors must be taken in to account. Thc interrelationship of these factors is more complex, and at this point in time, may defy accurate measurement.
Recognizing these factors, the paper examines the relevance of organizational theory, specifically the presented framework, to health administration.
